These #HSDGoTigers had some very special visitors last week!

Last month, the computer science class learned about some of the many ways computer science is currently being used in the military.
SSG Robert Lee Shumaker II SSG and SSG Brent Mciver provided a presentation on CS technology in the military and gave a demonstration of the Packbot. This robot is a multi-mission tactical mobile robot developed and manufactured by iRobot. It is designed for use by war fighters and first responders to carry out dangerous missions in high-threat battlefield scenarios.
The robot is controlled by a mechanism very similar to controllers used for gaming. These controllers, combined with cameras mounted on the robot, allow soldiers to drive the robot in remote locations. After the demonstration, students were able to practice driving this robot using the controller and mounted cameras! #HSDGoTigers

Based on the quality of their work, several Hillsboro creative writing students were invited to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point High School Writers' Workshop!
They were honored with lunch, had the opportunity to attend workshops led by college professors, and participated in an open mic. The keynote speaker was author Kim Suhr, who also led a workshop and even took time to sign copies of her book for a couple of our students! #HSDGoTigers #TigerProud

#BookWormWednesday returns and today we will be hearing from Emma!
Favorite Book: The Trials of Apollo
Author: Rick Riordan
Similar Books: Magnus Chase, Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus
“I recommend this book because the series offers action, drama, and a vast knowledge of mythology. People who like mythology and action will probably enjoy this book!
The location of my selfie was in the high school library. I chose this location because it's by all the other Rick Riordan books.”
Thank you for sharing Emma! We love hearing from all of Ms. Madden's English 10 readers! #HSDGoTigers

An additional 36 Hillsboro High School students can now call themselves novelists after participating in National Novel Writing Month this November!
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a national writing event, where the challenge is to complete an entire rough draft of a novel in just 30 days.
Sophomores in Ms. Madden's English 10 classes collectively wrote novels totaling an astounding 766,338 words! That’s over three quarters of a million words with an average of 21,287 words per student. To put that into perspective, 20,000 words is roughly 40 pages double spaced! #HSDGoTigers #TigerProud

As a final assessment of their technical writing unit, seniors in Ms. Madden's English 12 class are making original Lego structures and creating step-by-step, technical instruction manuals for them complete with photos! #HSDGoTigers
