Students learn about Indigenous culture and effigy mounds

ELA 7 classes traveled to Devil's Lake State Park and Man Mound Park in the Baraboo area on Thursday, May 11th.

They participated in the Effigy Mounds Program led by DNR Naturalist Susan Johansen Mayoleth. Students learned about Indigenous American culture in our area to deepen their understanding of Native American beliefs in the current novel they are reading, Touching Spirit Bear

Students were educated about the mounds, the stories behind them, and were able to create their own on the beach. Man Mound Park contains the only intact man-shaped mound structure in North America, so the day was full of valuable learning opportunities.
