Students pose in makeshift shelter

A dual-enrollment college credit course at Hillsboro, UW-Oshkosh English 101's class theme is survival.

Whether it’s natural disasters, war, disease, poverty, injustice, or trauma, the circumstances people survive shape who they are. That's why survival stories resonate so deeply with us; they’re a testament to what human beings are capable of.

As part of the course, students recently participated in a survival skills program at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. They learned techniques for proper fire starting, site selection, and shelter building, and explored the hierarchy of human needs.
