“We don’t just transport kids, we’re managing routines, schedules, and peace of mind.”
When Jill Stekel started driving a school bus in 2017, her husband had recently taken over as the district's director of transportation. “My husband convinced me, or maybe I should say he twisted my arm, to go out and get my bus license so I could help.” Until that time, driving a school bus was not a job Jill anticipated she would do, and she was unprepared for the deep rewards she felt in the role.
“I am the first adult from school to greet so many children each morning, and the last one to see them in the evening. That’s a really special position to be in.” Driving has also allowed her to forge a depth of relationship with a variety of students that she wouldn’t otherwise have. “I have the opportunity to hear about their day, and learn about what’s important to them, or sometimes we’re just a sounding board.”
Though Jill came upon her career as a driver somewhat unexpectedly, she did enter the field with a sense of the job. “My grandmother was a school bus driver. My father was a school bus driver, and my husband is a school bus driver. So, I suppose I’ve come from, and continue to be surrounded by, dedicated and talented people who truly care about their responsibilities.” Since joining the district as a bus driver, Mrs. Stekel has taken on a number of other roles, including Library Aide at the Middle/High School and managing the district’s social media presence.
Districts across the country have been challenged in recent years to meet transportation needs, as more students require access to school transportation and fewer drivers are available to take on the job. “In the past, our school bus drivers were mostly local farmers. There aren’t as many of those around anymore, unfortunately, and we’ve definitely felt the squeeze in the local busing industry.” Stekel says.
It has, however, provided opportunities for a new generation of drivers to step forward, which Jill Stekel hopes our local community considers. “We’re always hopeful more people in the community will step forward with interest. If you’re a dependable person with the capacity to be friendly, fair, and firm, and you’re willing to work with us to get your CDL with endorsements, give us a call!”
